Jackson,MS to Shreveport, LA

1/27/09 Traveled from Morton, MS close to Jackson to Shreveport, LA.

Weather - Beautiful day, 75. A little rain in afternoon.

Today we traveled from Jackson, MS to Shreveport, LA. After leaving Jackson we made a stop at Vicksburg, MS a site of a major battle in the Civil War. The Rebel army had control of Vicksburg which gave them control of the Mississippi River. Union General Ulysses S. Grant made two or three attacks on Pemberton's Rebel enforcements after crossing the Mississippi south of Vicksburg and eventually coming in from the east. These failed but he then held siege on the town for 47 days until Pemberton finally surrendered. This victory plus the surrender of Lee at Gettysburg the day before is considered the turning point of the war.

From Vicksburg we crossed over the mighty Mississippi River and enjoyed warm weather once again until about three fourths of the way across Louisiana when the temperature dropped about 30 degrees in about a half hour from 75 down to about 45. We stopped at a KOA RV park close to Shreveport, LA. The park had nice facilities with full hookup including cable TV. The only problem with cable TV was that I forgot the remote for the TV and there was no way to scan for channels so it was back to the rooftop antenna. We solved this problem by picking up a universal remote at a Walmart the next day.
