Dallas (Weatherford), Texas to Carlsbad, New Mexico

1/29/09 Today we drove from Dallas (Weatherford), Texas to Carlsbad, NM

Weather - Just above freezing but nice.

Boy, Texas is a big state. I'll have to say that it is interesting though. We saw a lot of oil wells and a lot of wells being drilled. It was surprising at the amount of drilling going on. I guess that I had assumed that there wasn't much going on in established areas. Perhaps these are not high producing wells like those offshore but there sure were a lot of tank trucks on the highways hauling crude from clusters of tanks out in the fields.

The other thing that we saw was a lot of wind generators in operation. We have seen the wind generators along I10 west of Palm Desert in California and thought that there were a lot there but there were many more in Texas. On the Interstate three semis passed us carrying two blades each or enough for two wind generators. These things are huge.

Also we were surprised at the number of large cotton fields we saw. We basically were following I20 out through Abilene and then picking up US176 to head to Carlsbad, NM. Once off I20 we were traveling through open country on a 2 lane with hardly any traffic. This was a real treat from Interstate travel with semis zooming by all the time and a lot of traffic. We could just imagine the cattle drives from years ago across this wide open country. Those were some real hardy souls back in those days.

We ended the day parking in a KOA campground about 15 miles NW of Carlsbad.
